Welcome to First Friends Playschool, our Community run childcare facility which offers an exceptional level of childcare for children aged from 2 and a half to 5. We are based on the Mulranny Road, across from the entrance to the greenway at Knocknageeha, Newport, Co. Mayo.

First Friends  is HSE approved, fully insured, and has Garda clearance for all staff. The welfare of the children placed in our care and their parents peace of mind are at all times our primary concern. Our team members have a true vocation when it comes to looking after children. Each of our staff are mothers themselves and all understand the importance of balancing physical, emotional, intellectual and social wellbeing and development of the children in our care.

Our Pre-School programme is devised around the principles of Siolta and the themes of Aistear. The Aistear curriculum framework identifies four important themes which enable children to grow and develop as competent and confident learners. These are: - Well being, Identity and belonging, Communicating & Exploring & thinking. We adhere to these themes and our programme is set out each month under these four headings. The programme also ensures that we meet the developmental needs of the child in all areas: - physically, socially, emotionally, intellectually, aesthetically and creatively.

It is important to remember that children need a structure to their day but it also needs to be flexible enough to allow children seize opportunities for learning that are not always adult directed. This is very much allowed for in our daily routine.
Our daily activities range as follows:

·  Creative Play: Drawing, painting, modelling, collages, junk art,

·  Imaginative Play: Music, Dancing, Singing & Dressing-up

·   Listening to stories, rhymes, and poems, looking at books

·  Outdoor Play: outdoor play area, wheeled toys, slide various outdoor toys.

·  Creative Play: Environment: Learning about plants, animals and birds, weather, people and places.

·  Socialising: Learning to share and be part of a group, to be polite and to overcome shyness and build confidence.

·  Who they are!: Learning how to recognise their name, age address, families, parts of the body and taking care of it e.g. Toileting, washing hands, dressing, road safety, dangers!

·  Outings & Events: Birthdays, Halloween, Christmas & Easter parties, Sports/Fun day.
